“What story do you want tonight, my children?” Kana sat against the railing of the ship and gathered her children close. “It’s almost time for bed.”

“Tell us about the sea snakes!” Doris cheered.

“Again?”

“With their metal scales and glowing eyes.” Pan opened zir eyes as wide as zi could, zir deep brown irises glowing in the light of the fire.

“Always monsters with you two,” Volt sat beside his bondmate and Pan crawled onto his lap. “Don’t you want to hear of something more pleasant? An adventure story? Or a poem?”

“They’re not monsters. They’re guardians,” Pan argued.

Volt shrugged. “They’re giant snakes that sink ships. They sound like monsters to me.”

“M’Sormee tells the stories better,” Doris grunted.

Volt feigned insult. “Well.”

Kana touched his shoulder. “You’re not entirely wrong, darling.”

Reve sat her dinner plate aside. She rested her arms on her knees as she watched the little family with interest.

“M’Sormee, they aren’t monsters, are they?” Pan questioned.

Kana wrapped an arm around each of her children, her voice low and husky as she spoke. “It’s true that some of the serpents have gone wild. They’ve been guarding their treasures and secrets since the beginning of time. A few were bound to lose their minds.”

“Those are the ones that attack ships?” Doris questioned.

“Yes. They rise out of the sea like mountains of steel and lifestone, sinking ships and dragging their treasures back to their lairs. Some of the greatest Amazons in history were serpent hunters.”

“I’m going to slay a serpent someday,” Doris announced. “I’m going to cut off its head and make it my masthead.”

“Doris!” Volt gasped in shock. Kana only smiled.

Pan took his mother’s hand. “But they’re not all wild.”

Kana shook her head. Of course not. The oldest and wisest of the serpents never leave the depths. They guard the most precious secrets in all of Aggar. Stories, histories, treasures that not even the Choir can touch. They are the guardians, born from our planet’s core. Their veins are pure lifestone, binding them to Aggar like the stones of our ship bind us as a family. Stories claim that if you meet one of the ancient ones and prove you are pure of heart, zi will tell you zir secret.”

“That’s what I want to do. I don’t want to kill anything.” Pan’s eyes were already dropping with exhaustion.

Kana ran her fingers through zir hair. “You can do whatever you dream and work for, my love.”

“Do you think a serpent will ever attack the Niachero?” Doris questioned.

“The sea is vast and impossibly deep. Even a serpent as large as a mountain could go centuries without meeting another of its kind. If we ever encounter a serpent, it will be because destiny wills it.”

Doris and Pan nodded off in their parents’ arms. Within moments they were limp with sleep. Volt gathered Pan into his arms and carried zir to their cabin before quickly returning for Doris.

“Are they real?” Reve called.

Kana glanced up at her in surprise. “The serpents?”

“Yes. Have you ever seen one?”

Kana smiled gently. “No, I haven’t. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t real.
